Beverly, 8 pounds of incredible predatory kittie, started hollering "meow" at me. I have found it wise to go find out what she wants when that happens.
There, in the dining room, she had brought me a young dead possum. I made the appropriate horrified noises and got the dustpan and broom and trash can.
The dead possum woke up and ran. I hollered "meow" and the dogs arrived. Jeffory wanted to chase it, but Gator grabbed it before it made it under the fridge and bit it. Then he put it down and went away. Gator is hard to excite.

I think Beverly is going to quit bringing me prey. I have not reacted in a respectful way to the rat, the grackle and the possum. She went ahead and killed the mouse. I think she figured it wasn't a worthy treat. She just eats the little birds under my bed, but i thought I rescued the second grackle she brought in. I tried to put it back outside, but Jeffory caught it and bit it.

Beverly is getting back at all birds for the loss of her roomies.

A horrible occurrence

Today, under the guise of “census” I received an item of fundraising and propaganda from the Republican Party. It was a very governmental official looking envelope with “Republican census document enclosed”.
It was a questionnaire in it with instructions on how to fill it out.
I do plan to fill it out and mail it back to cost them money and upset their computers.
I am offended to find such a thing in my mailbox, and am offended that they are using the word census on the envelope. This will confuse the little old lady behind me to the point of a phone call.

And why would they want ME on a mailing list? What a colossal waste of money and trees. This is worse than the live rat my beloved pets presented me with at 3 AM.

I was awaken by a large and smelly commotion from a deep and peaceful sleep. My beloved pets, jeffory Springjeans, Gator Katrinason and Beverly Diva was swirling around the bed, toenails clicking, bodies stinking.
When they gathered around my bookshelf/nightstand, I turned on the light. I saw Beverly sitting behinf it in the corner, and I was afraid the dogs had gone berserk and we attacking her, but she was in on it. Jeffory was going full out with his nose at the bottom of the shelf, and beverly was trying to dig under. Here comes Gator to the rescue. He put a mighty paw against the back and pulled, with tiny horror movie screams emitting from below.
Then a rat appears on top of the shelf. I bailed. Much disturbance continued, but I was in the other room.
Trouble is, they lost it. Now what do I do? I don't want to go in there to sleep with a rat, but it's 3 AM.

Historically, elections have been held in church halls. This is helpful when there are no city owned buildings in a precinct. They have also been mildly compensated for opening their doors.

In this primary, two churches decided they no longer wanted voters coming to their buildings. This is their right, as they are privately owned. However, these two also pulled down the notices of the new sites taped to their doors by election officials. In some ways, these churches are disenfranchising their neighbors. How are voters supposed to know where to go? This is not the way to be a part of the community.

I am given to understand that these particular denominations have recently decided that they despise politics. I therefore need to remind them it is politics that keep their tax breaks and views safe.

We, the voters of the United States of America, vow to continue to protect your rights even while you look down on ours.

Forums and Stuff

I have been thinking about all these forums and speeched we make to various Democratic clubs, and I think I need to talk the League of Women Voters into getting it done earlier.
At Tejanos, I hadn't planned to go because I was going to tell Trans Texas Corridor advocates from TexDot that I don't like it any better now and the reason they don't have any money is because they waste it. However, Gator and Jeffory took off and Gator kept going.

So I got there with Gator's company and told them that story and how I was still going to keep pushing precinct conventions. i get a laugh, then I sit down.

What I think is good for my ego is that Rep. Herrero, the MC and 2 chair candidates all mentioned "as Carolyn said".

Then Thursday morning, Alex said we were having a banquet fundraiser on the 28th. Like all the candidates have time and money for that at that time?

We're just waiting on Barak's schedule.

No write-ins

I checked with 2 sources today and there will be no write-ins for precinct chair if there isn't a declared write-in. Not only that, but the deadline for filing as a write0in was an hour earlier than just regular filing.
Whose ridiculous idea is that?
I can understand why the parties like it better, they then have better control over the grassroots.
Everybody be sure to go to the precinct convention at your polling place at 7:15 election day. That's where neighborhoods tell Austin and Washington what to do.

Question from South Texas Politics

Friday night, the Chair candidates were invited to a debate. It was actually one of those question and answer sessions. Evy Coppola was a no show.

One of the questions was "Shouldn't precinct chairs be sanctioned for supporting a republican in a non-partisan race (such as city council)" This is not a direct quote, but as close as I can remember.

Yesterday, I asked the question of a bright 16 year old.

She said you can't tell people who to support.
I said the precinct chairs take an oath to support only Democratic candidates.

She said that's different.
I said, remember, this is a non-partisan race and you shouldn't ask people what party they belong to.

She said, That's complicated, isn't it?
Actually, yes.

In a non-partisan race, as I said on the TV, as County chair, I couldn't get up and tell people to vote for any one candidate because I was obviously a partisan person, but I could support someone quietly. I don't ask people what party they belong to, but i often get a vibe. As a member of the Beach Access Coalition, I supported 4 people for city council. I still haven't asked
3 about their affiliation. They were on our side on the issues we cared about.

The Democratic Party is not the one that demands group think out of its members. The first time we try to make rules that way, I'm on my way to Costa Rica.

Saturday, at the Patriot Guard mission, I was surrounded by people who don't think the way i do. I keep quiet in those situations because we're there for only one reason. I did wear my Code Pink pants, though.

There I ran into a guy I could have supported for city council when he ran. I found out Saturday, to my shock, that he's a Republican. Why sould I be surprised? He's a marketing major.

You want to hear about my sunburn? The Perverted Church didn't show up. I'm glad because we of the Patriot Guard weren't sure of all the other groups who showed up. They were making comments about thumpin' folks.
We mustered up at 8 and were kickstands up at 9. One of our guys counted 218 bikes before the Coalition of Clubs arrived at 10.
About noon, when the creeps were scheduled to arrive, word was passed that they were coming. It turned out that it was a group of gay and lesbian activists fromt eh university. There almost was a problem as the other groups didn't do the stand shoulder to shoulder as they should have. They surrounded these kids and wouldn't let them by. I kept those in my area calm by pointing out that that group was the one the perverted Church said God hates so much he killed 3 kids in a helocopter. The guys calmed down.
One thing that really bothered me was the fact that as I was standing the line (I was there 5 hours), one of my rival candidates came along with her campaign manager in her GI Forum cap on. The walked along until they found one of the bikes with the flag mounted on it and had themsselves a photo op. What was really bad was they held the flag out backward.
Afterward, I went to a get out the vote rally and showed how the voting machine worked and registered voters. I didn't know I was going to get to go one the radio and talk to the voters about how the prcinct conventions work and how Democrats are much better for everybody.
Once again, my competertors were no shows.

Labor Council

I am very disappointed in the Labor Council They were to have their interviews for endorsement on Sunday and asked for RSVPs for the assigned times. I scheduled my life around 3:00 in the afternoon, so as to be early. When I checked my cell phone on a Patriot Guard mission to make sure I was okay on time, I found a message. It was from Saturday at 1 saying the state had already made endorsements, so the local candidates were moved up earlier. I had missed my Sinday morning appointment.
Later, I found out that Joel Mumford and Coach Salinas hadn't even been called, and that Susie Luna Saldana was asking questions of Evy Coppola. Since Susie is Lucy Rubio's manager, she shouldn't even have been there. I later learned Alex Garcia wasn't there, either. I don't know about Robert Zamora, maybe his e-mail didn't get to him.
I do know from making calls to the constables that they are hard to get hold of, so I don't know if they got their interviews.
I have long been a union girl and am very disappointed in this messup.

Where is everybody?

This is a strange primary season here in Nueces County. Perhaps it's because there are only 2 contested county wide races, sheriff and county chair. But there are 2 others that have fairly wide effect; Justice of the Peace, precinct 2, and county commissioner 2 (I think). So why are people not showing up to support each other? Oh well. I am.

What I find so weird is that none of the other candidates for Chair are coming to things. Now, I will say that Evy does show up, but I don't think it ever actually helps her. Monday, at the YWCA Racial Justice Forum, the photographer for the paper looked at me ans said "you are everywhere. Aren't you?" Well, yeah.

One thing I think is not nice is that Alex is standing up and introducing or hosting for one candidate over another. This is not fair. At the moment, he is the face of the Nueces County Democratic Party. I've been joking about how I'm losing out on t-shirts because I can't be for any Democrat over another, but it's not really a joke. Alex is also hosting a breakfast for Rick Noriega.
Ray McMurrey is also running for Senate, he's from here, and even though he doesn't really have a chance, he's sincere. This is not fair.

I guess we'll have to talk it over when we debate next week.

Today, the House upheld the President's veto of SCHIP. And I heard a Texas Republican whose name I don't remember bragging about it. See? This is the kind of thing they believe.- force women to have children, then the hell with them.

And on Fox News (I was at the Navy Hospital) I heard some dipshit announce the economy was just fine, we should invest money in business. Yeah, that'll help a lot. If they send everybody a pinche $800 or whatever, it'll just end up in the corporations anyway.

What would be a better way to help businesses, especially small ones? Universal single payer health insurance. That would put a whole lot of money into folks' wallets. Toyota would no longer have to build a plant in Canada to save money.

Today I got an e-mail saying how wonderful his company is to give free health screenings. But not enough people were going, so they gave $150 in a gift card to everybody who came. First, it's not free (he thought it isn't tax supported- they get a tax write off for all that sort of thing). The rat4e payers get soaked for it. Also, they now have access of your health history. If you or your family looks like the types who will be expensive, they'll find a way to get rid of you. Otherwise their insurance payments will go up.

W met with protesters today for the first time. These, however, were the ones protesting Roev. Wade. he called them "Pro Life". In that case, he's got a lot of nerve meeting with these godly folks when he's killed off more people than Saddam ever did.

Of course, I have a lot of problem with these people calling themselves pro life but they're perfectly happy with war and the death penalty. And that's just the start of that rant.

National Folks

I keep listening to all this Presidential primary rhetoric and am totally amazed. Rudy is trying to make us believe that Republicans care about the environment when speaking from the Everglades.
Mitt trying to make us believe he cares about jobs and how he'll bring them back to Michigan. His bunch are one of the main reasons a;; the jobs went away.
A while back, Toyota (I believe) decided not to build a car plant in the US because they'd have to pay health insurance. they went to Canada instead. That's one thing no on4e brings up when talking about universal single payer health insurance. It would stimulate jobs.
And what would Huckabee think if the religion that was Constitutionally mandated not the one he's so happy about? He sounds a whole lot like the ayatollas.

Some musings about Kucinich

Some of my friends are upset about Dennis Kucinich not being on the Texas ballot. I'm not. He refused to sign the little oath on the application that says he would support the winner if he lost. Well, how would he feel if he were the winner and the rest refused to support him? I'm getting tiered of his attitude.

Some others of my friends are trying to tell me that Todd hunter is a good guy because he was a Democrat in the legislature for 10 years. Well, he quit to be a lobbyist and now he's changed to a republican and is running against Representative Juan Garcia. I could accept it if he ran against him in the primary, but no. He signed on to all those horrible ideas of the Republican party.

See the matchup? Dennis says the rules don't apply to me. So does Bush. Todd Hunter has signed on to those ideas.

Last night, a friend called and told me she was hearing teasing "news" against Lucy Rubio from the consultant running Robert Zamora's campaign. I went on TV and said there was no excuse for anyone making ugly remarks about anyone else. That's one of the reasons we lot the county in 06.

Today, the newspaper basically ran an article to make up for leaving Lucy's name out of the list of candidates for chair on Wednesday. One of the comments suggested that if Lucy ran, Susie Saldana would run the office. If Robert won, Lisa Hernandez would run the office. From what I can tell, that is some of their intention.
Then the commenter said if I won, the Noyolas would run things. That pisses me off. Since the day I was born, nobody's been able to run me.
They said that Alex should win so barbara Cline and Susan Reeves could run the office. Rinning the office isn't everything, and the party has essentially shut down for the last year. That's not helpful to the party.
Now I feel bad for Evy. They didn't suggest she would win and be run by someone.

Mike Huckabee has a reputation for a fine sense of humor. Early last year, i8 saw him on several TV shows and found him personable. I no longer do. Today, he made comments while bird hunting about shooting people who oppose his candidacy. I suppose he thinks he's being cute.
Talking about shooting people while carrying a gun is not funny.

Why we vote by party affiliation

Several of my friends have recently announced that it is a bad thing for judges in Texas to be running for office under party labels. They say it hurts the party (Democratic) because they gather up all the campaign money, then don't help the party. They say that much money makes them all corrupt and that they favor those who pay for their campaigns.

Right now, I would like to address party affiliation. Most of my life, I, like others, have not been aware of who the judges were and how well they did their jobs. I always used the D after their names to help me choose for whom to vote. Why would I do that, especially now that I have several friends who are Republicans and are running for judge, shouldn't I give them some consideration? Well, no. Even though they are my friends, they have bought in to the Republican platform, which appears to me to be completely contrary to the US Constitution and against the rule of law. I have been disgusted with all the shenanigans and finagling the Republican administration has been pulling, I could never respect a Republican jurist, even though he is my friend.

Last night I was visiting with my friend at the coffee house. She and I are adult enough to remain friends even though we occasionally support different candidates. I can think she's wrong, and she can think I'm wrong, but we don't go hatin'. there are some in this county that are carrying grudges from when McGovern ran.
I'm hoping I can help change that attitude.

Some plans

The local Democratic party has been uninterested in having volunteers around for years. The Headquarters has been kept open, but in name only. It's a waste of money. Because of that, various groups have splintered around with different agendae.

I plan to have the headquarters open every afternoon and available for meetings. I plan to habe anyone who wants to come help out come on down.

I plan to have a sign outside so people can find us.

Maybe it's time to come back.
